10 Tips for Training Your Vocal Cords
Your vocal cords will actually determine how well you sing. When properly trained, you will be able to get a good tone and pitch. However, if they are weak, your voice will be weak as well. Nothing sounds worse than a weak cracking voice! With that in mind, you want to use some techniques to train your vocal cords so you can get the most out of your voice, and become the star of the show in front of your family and friends!
Here is a list of 10 tips that you can start using now to help you become the best singer that you can be!
1. Sing like you talk. Practice singing the same way you talk—use the same volume and the same movements. This will help you learn how to regulate the movement of your larynx, which in turn will help you sing better.
2. Practice moving from one vowel to the next. This will actually help your vocal cords learn how to transition between different sounds. It will make them stronger and help you master different notes so you will be able to tackle some of the harder songs out there.
3. Strengthen your vocal cords by holding a note as long as you can. Find a note that you are comfortable singing and hold it until you can’t hold it anymore. Rest and then repeat the process several times until you are able to hold the note for longer periods of time.
4. Do a series of arpeggios and scales. Do them for three to five minutes at a time, and then rest for three to five minutes. Repeat this process for 40 minutes, even if you feel tired and want to quit. you can even practice longer if you feel up to it.
5. Work on closing your vocal cords properly. When you sing, your vocal cords need to come together so you won’t have a breathy singing voice. Take a deep breath, keep your mouth open and say “ahh” in order to train your vocal cords to stay together so you will have a full, rich voice when you sing.
6. Train your inner larynx muscles. Push your skin up around your lips and breathe out. Make an “ahh” sound so you can strengthen the muscles that will control your singing and your sound.
7. Get enough sleep every night. Plenty of sleep every night is especially important for all things especially singing. Vocal cords are like any other body part. They need rest in order to get stronger and heal, so make sure you get a full night’s sleep each and every night so your vocal cords will always be at 100%.
8. Sing notes at the top and bottom of your range. This will help your vocal cords get stronger. It will also help you learn to control your breathing as you move from one note to the next, so this is an important exercise that you definitely want to include in your practice sessions.
9. Keep your throat still when you sing. That way, you’ll have to use the inner larynx muscles that actually close the cords together and produce a good tone. This might take some practice, so be willing to put the time in so you can master this technique, and consider having someone watch you to ensure that your throat is as still as you think it is. Remember practice makes perfect!
10. Do tongue rolls. Researchers believe that the tongue actually plays a role in strengthening the vocal cords. With that in mind, put your tongue down flat in your mouth and then roll up the sides when you sing so you can make your vocal cords stronger.
Once you train your vocal cords, you can improve your singing. Keep in mind that this will take some practice, so don’t get frustrated if you don’t grasp all of the techniques immediately. Just try them slowly and you will get better over time.
